Tequilas and Mescals, Hoxton Hotel: January 28th 2015
Now this Maclynn8 event wasn’t just for the hell-raisers. Last week a gallant band of Maclynn8 members, including a Research Scientist, a PR director, a Private Equity hot shot and a top management consultant, arrived at the super cool and very buzzy Hoxton Hotel to meet ‘the savage water of sorcery’ in a spirit of reconciliation.
Some of us Maclynn8 event attendees were still shuddering at the memory of previous encounters, but here was a chance to meet tequila and mescal as they should be: elegant, cultured spirits of nuance and character, as opposed to diabolical seducers. At least that was the idea. By the time I had finished a superb Tequila Margarita and had downed Tasting Number One, I was in danger of becoming loose cannon. So deep breath, small sips and focus on the expert: Mexican tequila ambassador’s son and world-renowned expert Jesse Estes, whose family’s tequila brand is the highly regarded Ocho, with a big red 8 on the bottle – our kind of tequila!
Introduced to us by charismatic Drinks Galore supremo Mark Jennings, Jesse Estes knows everything there is to know about tequilas and mescals and all of our Maclynn8 event guests really found it very interesting. Somebody had to ask the question: “What’s with the worm in mescal?” Apparently it’s in there to show that the tequila is sufficiently high proof to preserve the worm intact. Jesse, however, considers it a gimmick these days and reminded us that spirits take on the flavour of whatever is infused in them. So if you stick a worm in a great mescal, within a couple of weeks the mescal tastes of worm. Yuck.
So instead of worms there were plenty of platters of palate pleasing (sorry) eats to keep our Maclynn8 stomachs happy and everything went swimmingly. A fun-loving bunch of Maclynn8-istas made for great company and no-one turned green. Viva la Maclynn! Another successful Maclynn8 event.
