There’s nothing better than a little bit of black and white movie nostalgic romance. But how do you effectively rustle up a bit of the past for date night in a world that has gone digital? If you want to impress your date with something, stylish with a lots of class, cabaret is the way to go.

LONDON

In London dinner at Brasserie Zedel is a step back in time especially when the live band is delivering that magical old world ambiance that’s so hard to find. Even better are the ridiculously low prices for rather exceptional French cuisine. The room has a real sparkle and most importantly you can hold a conversation without shouting at your date or being eavesdropped. Right across the hall in the same premises is Le Crazy Coqs where in this intimate lounge you can savour phenomenal talent while sipping on a martini. It’s all note perfect and will leave you giddy with romance.

NEW YORK CITY

Across the pond in New York there’s only one place to be at 9pm on a Monday night and that’s Birdland for Jim Caruso’s Cast Party. The most hilarious host in the big apple, a venue of historic note, cosy tables, an unexpected roll call of talent and a feeling that you are in the heart of this great city being fabulous. Dine early at Marseilles just at the end of the block on 44th and 9th and two minutes’ walk away and then stroll up the block to take your seats and table for an evening of musical brilliance. You’re in New York so go on, order a couple of Manhattan’s for you and your date.

PARIS

Paris instantly conjures the sound of Edith Piaf, but where to find the jazzy soul of the 50’s and 60’s in the modern age? If you need inspiration then watch the gorgeous Oscar-nominated movie “Paris Blues” with the beautiful Joanne Woodward and the ridiculously handsome leading men Sidney Poitier and Paul Newman. Before boarding the Eurostar be sure to get a reservation at Jazz Club Etoile which has played host to Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Domino and BB King. It’s très très magnifique!

Sally Bowles in the movie Cabaret sang:

What good is sitting alone in your room, come hear the music play! Life is a cabaret old chum, so come to the cabaret.

Indeed she was right and it’s a date night you’ll always remember.
