But after Maclynn and Rendezvous’s recent singles evening at Hay Hill in Mayfair, I was reminded of something no algorithm has yet managed to replicate. Chemistry.
No profile can tell you whether someone will make you laugh. You can’t swipe on the way a conversation flows, how at ease someone makes you feel, or whether an hour disappears without either of you noticing. Those are the things that only reveal themselves in person, over a drink, in a room full of possibility.
As guests arrived at Hay Hill for our latest singles’ mixer, there was the familiar flutter of nerves that comes with any singles event. But it didn’t take long for the room to settle into an easy, convivial buzz, guests moving naturally between groups, discovering shared interests, and enjoying the simple pleasure of getting to know someone new.
The evening was curated for guests in their forties and fifties, and what struck me most was how little anyone seemed interested in performing. You can always feel that sort of thing in the air and there was none of it. There was no pressure to deliver the funniest story or the most impressive career highlight. Instead, people asked real questions, listened properly, and appeared genuinely curious about one another.
What I love about evenings like this is watching people put the checklist down. Online, it's easy to reduce someone to a set of filters. In the room, you see them laugh at something unexpected, and that tells you far more than any bio ever could.
Perhaps that’s one of the great advantages of dating later in life. There’s less concern with finding someone who looks perfect on paper, and far more interest in finding someone whose company you simply enjoy. The scorecard falls away, and what’s left is something closer to instinct.
It’s a reminder that the qualities which make relationships last, kindness, humour, emotional maturity, the ability to make someone feel instantly comfortable, don’t fit neatly into a dating profile. They can’t be filtered for. They can only be felt.
This is precisely why evenings like these still matter, and why, in an increasingly digital world, they matter more than ever. They offer something no app can fully recreate: the chance to experience someone’s personality first-hand, rather than simply reading about it in bullet points.
Not everyone who attended Hay Hill will go on to meet their future partner, and that’s perfectly alright. The success of an evening like this was never measured solely in matches made. It’s about creating the conditions for something real to happen. Sometimes that’s a relationship. Sometimes it’s just a wonderful evening. Both count.
