Romance on the Greek Islands

02 August 2018 | 3 mins

For sheer joy, entertainment and fun with a large dollop of romance, it's hard to beat the Greek Islands. Read on for my ultimate Greek Islands getaways.

If you’re a beach person, then you cannot miss Shipwreck Bay on Zakynthos accessible only by boat. Stay at the F Zeen Retreat in Kefalonia, it’s adults only and 54 rooms perfection. Three pools, 2 restaurants and bars, and interior design that says, take your shoes off and drop your shoulders by three inches.

Of course, you cannot miss the epic romance of Santorini, but it’s essential to curate where you stay and eat to avoid the tourist version of this must-see island. Perched on the cliffs of Oia is the fabulous Katikies, where you are more likely to run into a Hollywood Producer or a renowned author. Essential to book a table at the edge of the terrace at Kapari, it’s quite simply breath-taking.

Paros is the island for the cognoscente in the Cyclades, and if you want access to the picture-perfect resort town of Naoussa but without the buzz of motorbikes, then Mr & Mrs White is the hilltop idyll that is designer perfection. Have the hotel organise a little boat with captain to take you to the stunning Blue Lagoon off the neighbouring island Anti Paros for a dip, and book you a table on the upstairs patio at the sensational Anna for a culinary Grecian odyssey.

With Mykonos now apparently usurping Ibiza as the destination for the Crystal sipping MTV crowd, how to do it in stylish, quiet romance while being close enough to dip into that scene if you want to? The choice of luxury is wide, but our favourites would be Myconian Naia because it’s just so gorgeous and an easy ten-minute stroll into town if you can tear yourself away. Santa Marina because it boasts its own private beach and is home to the Buddha Bar. Don’t miss the no reservations Kiki’s Tavern, there’s no website so have the hotel arrange transport.

If you’re obsessed with Mama Mia and need to visit the island where it was filmed, then you’ll be going to Skopelos. You’ll need to fly to Skiathos and then take a ferry. There’s probably only one place that measures up to stay and that’s Adrina Beach and it’s really quite lovely.

Wherever you decide to go, if you don’t fly directly into Mykonos, or Santorini for instance, then you may find yourself overnighting in Athens which is really no hardship. Book rooms at the Grand Bretagne and have dinner in the impossibly romantic and only restaurant in the Plaka frequented by locals, Psaras.
