Another in our series – the latest Maclynn review. We take an in-depth peek at Marc Levy’s latest novel ‘Elle et Lui’.
Review by Alex Vitillo.
Work, fitness, friends, cultural events, theatre, fashion, my life seems always too busy to spare time for a book, but I never miss a date (so to speak) with Marc’s Levy novels. The French architect, turned successful writer, never fails to deliver an intriguing story with romance, surprise, action and sometimes fantasy.
His first book ‘If Only It Were True’ was such a hit that in 2005 Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to make the film ‘Just Like Heaven’ with Mark Ruffalo and Reese Witherspoon playing two characters who love each other while living in two distinct worlds (one of them being the afterlife!).
15 years later, 15 books later, 33 millions sold copies later, one of the secondary character from ‘If Only It Were True’ –Paul – returns in full glory. Paul Marlow is an American architect, turned writer (uhm.. see any resemblance here), who moved to Paris.
He accidentally meets an English actress who wants to change her life and even though Paris, is, ‘la ville de l’amour’ they both try really hard not to fall in love. When destiny calls however, it is hard to resist.
‘Elle et Lui’ (not yet translated in English) is a romantic comedy with lots of laughter, goofiness, qui-pro-quos, and of course, lots of love.
Marc Levy said in an interview that his inspiration comes from the small things in life.
“To be a writer you have to love observing and listening. By watching your surroundings, thoughts come to you.
All ideas comes from life as life has more imagination than all writers put together” Marc Levy
And maybe that is the secret to Marc Levy’s books: the way he orchestrates the plot, the simple fashion in which he presents his character’s inner feelings, the detailed descriptions of the places where his stories take place, it all makes us want to be part of it. Or, at least, I, wished it was all real, in particular the love part.
From the same author: amongst others, ‘Seven Days For An Eternity’, ‘Finding You’, ‘London Mon Amour’, ‘Rendezvous’, ‘Replay’.
