With a smart phone it is so easy to compose a thank you message, add some appropriate emojis to add colour and emphasis, and click send. Easily done, and usually appreciated, but not much in the effort department. With Thanksgiving approaching it’s a month in which some of us may be reflecting and saying out loud what we’re grateful for especially in these challenging times. Do we struggle to know what we’re grateful for or can we be more specific?
If someone has done something, or a catalogue of great things that make us happy, do we know what and can we say specifically what it is that you appreciate? When it comes to romance, what makes a thank you special is what you say and how you say it. The effort you put into it speaks volumes about the intention and the thought behind it. So, some ideas and tips from the heart of our cupid love communications team.
Cards and notes
Either go to a great stationer or shop online for some really beautiful cards, notes, and paper. Museum shops have beautiful cards, or you can go online to Smythson in the USA and UK for beautiful stationery. Whatever you do, avoid buying a card that already has something written in it by someone else, it’s not your words, it’s not the same. A tip is to open up a word document and have a go at typing your personal message until you have it right, and then write it by hand in the card.
Crafting your message
What to say? Think about what it is that you love about the object of your affection, and why they are special to you. “I love hearing you laugh”. “I love your smile and your beautiful eyes”. Put a dried autumn leaf of a blazing red or golden yellow inside with “I fall for you every time I see you”. It might sound corny, but when it’s received unexpectedly it can be really moving.
By all means if you are feeling creative compose your own sonnet, you will be forever remembered as the one who did something really extraordinary. If you need inspiration, you can go straight to an internet search of famous love poems and right there you’ll find a sentence that captures it all.
Make it personal
Do you know your love’s favourite colour or flowers? A card in that colour or with those flowers on the front, add an extra bit of romance to the thought. “I know you love peonies and while they are out of season, this card never will be. You’re blooming marvellous”. It just requires a little bit of imagination, being authentic, and don’t be afraid to be romantic.
Music – a personalised mixtape
Once upon a time we used to put together a “mixed tape” of music which for those of a certain age will ring true. It was an old-fashioned recording tape with a selection of songs that said something special to the one you love. A playlist of songs or a few lines of the lyrics in a card is going to provide the soundtrack to sheer romance.
The time and the thought behind it are what really counts. It shows that we really pay attention to the person that we love. We listen to them, we observe, we know. In a dating game we’d smash it because we know them intrinsically.
